Climber to at least 10 m. Tubers 3–7, slender, c. 5 mm in diam., cylindric, spreading, to at least 50 cm long, annually replaced, apices approximately 3–5 cm in diam., globose to ovoid; subtended by a woody crown. Indumentum usually present on vegetative shoots and inflorescences, most dense on inflorescence axes, ovaries and petioles, absent on bracts and tepals, plants glabrescent, hairs “stiletto-shaped” with four basal thickenings, 0.1–0.3 mm long. Stems 2.5–5 mm in diam., twining to the right, perennial, toward base woody and very spiny, unarmed on upper stem, terete. Leaves simple, opposite, blades narrowly ovate to ovate-oblong, chartaceous, 3–5-veined, margins entire, base usually obtuse or rounded, rarely cordate or sagittate, apex acuminate; petioles 1.7–3.3 cm long; cataphylls 4–6 by 4–5 mm, ovate; bulbils and lateral nodal organs absent. Inflorescences spicate, pendent, tepals inserted on discoid torus, free, erect, fleshy in texture with inner whorl tepals thicker than outer; male inflorescences simple or compound, compound inflorescences 1 per axil, simple/partial inflorescences (1–)2–6(–10) per axil, peduncles 2–3.5 mm long, axes (0.7–)1.5–4(–5.3) cm long; female inflorescences simple, rarely compound, compound inflorescences 1 per axil, simple/partial inflorescences 1–2 per axil. Male flowers with outer tepals 0.8–0.9 by 0.6–0.7 mm, ovate, inner tepals 0.6–0.8 by 0.4–0.6 mm, obovate, stamens 6. Capsules 17–25 by 36–50 mm. Seeds 5–6.2 by 4.5–5.2 mm, ovoidlenticular, wings 20–22.5 by 19–22 mm, extending all around seed margin.
