Robust climber to 15 m. Tubers, 1 per growing season, often with withering tuber of previous season, 30–35 by 3.3–4.5 cm, cylindric to clavate, vertically oriented. Indumentum present on all parts except inner whorl male tepals, hairs simple, 0.25– 1.8 mm long, dense on young shoots and inflorescences, grey and soft to the touch on leaves. Stems to 5 mm in diam., twining to the left, towards base woody and densely prickly, prickles lax on upper stem. Leaves 3–5-foliolate, sometimes simple on reproductive shoots, alternate, leaflet blades narrrowly to broadly obovate, chartaceous, with a single main vein per leaflet, prominent below, margins entire, base acute to narrowly cuneate, apex acuminate, lateral leaflet blades usually asymmetric; petioles 2–13.5 cm long, petiolules 1.5–2.5 mm long; cataphylls, bulbils and lateral nodal organs absent. Inflorescences pendent, tepals inserted on discoid torus, free, erect; male inflorescences racemose, compound, 1–3(–4) per axil, partial inflorescences 1–2(–3) per axil, peduncles 2.5–5.6 mm long, axes 1– 2.5 cm long; female inflorescences spicate, simple, 1–2 per axil. Male flowers on 0.3–0.6 mm long pedicels, outer tepals 1–1.1 by 0.9–1.1 mm, ovate, inner tepals 0.8–0.9 by 0.5–0.6 mm, narrowly obovate to oblanceolate, stamens 3, filaments 0.15–0.25 mm long, staminodes 3, inserted at pistillode base. Capsules 14–25 by 9–13.5 mm. Seeds 3.5–4.5 by 3–4.5 mm, lenticular-ovoid with an apical projection, wing 9.5–12 by 4.5–5 mm, oblong to ovate-oblong.
