Climber to at least 7 m. Tuber “long, going deep into the soil” (Prain & Burkill 1938). Indumentum absent. Stem base unknown, upper stems 2–5 mm in diam., twining to the right, annual, unarmed, terete. Leaves simple, opposite, sometimes subopposite, especially towards stem base, blade oblong to ovate-oblong, chartaceous, 5–7-veined, thinly chartaceous, never white and waxy below, margins entire, base usually cordate in leaves towards stem base or on main stems, obtuse to truncate or very shallowly cordate on fertile shoots, apex acuminate, petioles 1.5–6 cm long; cataphylls, bulbils and lateral nodal organs absent. Inflorescences spicate, pendent, tepals inserted on discoid torus, free, erect; male inflorescences compound, 1 per axil, partial inflorescences 1–3(–4) per axil, peduncles 0.6–1.3 mm long, axes 3–16 mm long; female inflorescences simple, 1–2 per axil. Male flowers with outer tepals 0.9–1 by 0.7–0.8 mm, ovate-oblong, inner tepals 0.6–0.8 by 0.5–0.7 mm, obovate, stamens 6. Capsules17–25 by 30–45 mm, margin of opercular strip membranous. Seeds 5.8–7 by 4–4.5 mm, lenticular to rounded; wings 18–20 by 15–16 mm, extending all around seed margin.
