Climber to 3 m. Tubers one per growing season, often with withering tuber of previous season, 2.5–3 by 1.6–2 cm, ovoid to globose, shallowly buried. Indumentum present on all parts except inner tepal whorl, especially dense on young shoots and inflorescences, hairs simple, 0.2–0.7 mm long, spreading to erect. Stems 1.5–4 mm in diam., twining to the left, annual, usually unarmed, terete. Leaves 3–5-foliolate, sometimes simple on fertile shoots, alternate, blade chartaceous; leaflet margins entire, base acute to cuneate, terminal leaflet oblanceolate to narrowly obovate, apex acuminate, single main vein prominent below; lateral leaflets elliptic to oblanceolate or narrowly to broadly obovate, usually asymmetric, apex acute to acuminate; petioles 1.5–11 cm long, petiolules 5–8 mm long; cataphylls 0.8–1.2 by 1–1.2 mm, ovate; bulbils 1.5–40 mm in diam., usually globose to ovoid; lateral nodal organs absent. Inflorescences pendent, tepals inserted on discoid torus, free, erect; male inflorescences racemose, simple or compound, compound inflorescences 1–3 per axil, simple/partial inflorescences (1–)2–3(–6) per axil, peduncles 3.5–22 mm long, axis 0.4–4.2 cm long; female inflorescences spicate, simple, 1–2 per axil. Male flowers on 0.6– 1 mm long pedicels, outer tepals 1.2–1.6 by 0.5–0.9 mm, ovate to broadly ovate, inner tepals 1.2–1.6 by 0.7–0.9 mm, ovate-oblong; stamens 3, staminodes 3. Capsules 19– 24 by 12–13.5 mm. Mature seeds not seen in Thai specimens, immature seeds 3.2– 4 by 3.5–4 mm, ovoid-lenticular with an apical projection, wing extending from seed base, 4–5 by 4–5 mm, oblong (see Prain & Burkill 1936 for description/illustration of mature seeds).
