Climber to 5 m. Underground parts unknown. Indumentum absent. Stems 1–2.5 in diam., twining to the right, annual, terete, toward base woody and spiny, unarmed on the distal stems. Leaves simple, opposite, blade narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate-oblong, chartaceous, 3-veined, base obtuse to rounded, apex acuminate, margins entire; petioles 1.2– 2.5 cm long; lateral nodal organs present especially towards stem base as a swollen petiole base, forming a sheath around the axillary branch where present, usually bearing small, pungent, straw-yellow spines; cataphylls and bulbils absent. Inflorescences spicate, simple, tepals inserted on a discoid torus, free, fleshy in texture with inner whorl tepals thicker than outer; male inflorescences 1 per axil, peduncles 0.35–0.8 cm long, axes 1.7–6.8 cm long; female inflorescences not seen, not bearing more than c. 6 capsules in fruit. Male flowers with outer tepals clearly longer than inner, 1.2–1.7 by 0.9–1.1 mm, ovateoblong, inner tepals 1–1.3 by 0.7–1 mm, obovate, thickened along ventral midrib in basal half, stamens 6. Female flowers not seen. Capsules 12–18.5 by 21–25 mm. Seeds (immature) 3.2–4 by 4–4.5 mm, ovoid-lenticular, wings 7.5–8.8 by 8.5– 10 mm, extending all around seed margin.
