Climber to 4 m. Tubers one per growing season, often with withering tuber of previous season, 13–15 by 0.6–1 cm, cylindric, deeply vertically buried, subtended by a woody crown. Indumentum absent. Stems 1.5–2.5 mm in diam., twining to the right, annual, unarmed, terete with shallow longitudinal ridges, usually wine-red to red-brown or coppery-brown, ridges darker. Leaves simple, opposite, blade narrowly ovate to deltoid, broadest below the point of petiole insertion (i.e. across the basal lobes) chartaceous, 5–7-veined, margins entire, base shallowly cordate to bluntly hastate, apex acute to acuminate; petioles 1.8–5.5 cm long; cataphylls 3.4–3.6 by 2.3–2.6 mm, ovate; bulbils and lateral nodal organs absent. Inflorescences spicate, simple or compound, pendent, tepals inserted on a discoid torus, free; male inflorescences simple or rarely compound, compound inflorescences 1 per axil, simple/partial inflorescences 1–3(–4) per axil, peduncles 1– 2.5 mm long, axes 0.5–2 cm long, flexuous; female inflorescences simple, 1–2 per axil, peduncles 8–20 mm long, axes 3–6 cm long. Male flowers with outer tepals 1.4–1.7 by 0.9–1.3 mm, broadly ovate to ovate-oblong, inner tepals 0.9–1.2 by 0.8–1 mm, obovate, stamens 6. Female flower tepals not more than 1.5 mm long. Capsules as in Fig. 24G, H, 12–19 by 21–25 mm. Seeds 6–7 by 5.5–6 mm, rounded to lenticular, wings 14–15 by 11–12.2 mm, extending all around seed margin.
