Robust climber to 15 m. Rhizome approximately 10–30 by 3– 7 cm, branched, shallowly buried, periderm hard, with rigid spine-like roots and narrower feeding roots. Indumentum of simple, 0.1–0.6 mm long hairs, present on all parts, usually dense on young shoots and inflorescences. Stems 3–10 mm in diam., twining to the left, towards base woody and densely spiny, spines few or unarmed on upper stems, terete. Leaves simple, alternate, blade broadly ovate to orbicular, chartaceous, (5–)7–9-veined, margins entire, base broadly cordate, apex acute to acuminate; petioles sometimes spiny; lateral nodal spines present, 2.5–5.5 mm long, recurved; cataphylls and bulbils absent. Inflorescences pendent; male simple or compound, compound inflorescences 1(– 2) per axil; simple/partial inflorescences 1 per axil, racemose with a cymule of 1–3 flowers at each node; female inflorescences simple, spicate, 1 per axil. Male flowers with outer tepals 2.8–3 by 1.1–1.3 mm, broadly elliptic to ovate-oblong, apex obtuse to rounded; inner tepals 2.3–2.6 by 1.4–1.5 mm, narrowly ovate to broadly elliptic, stamens 6. Capsules 18–26 by 20–25 mm. Seeds 4.5–5.5 by 4.5–5.5 mm, orbicularlenticular to ovoid-lenticular; wings 18–19 by 11–12 mm, all around seed margin.
